Australia: Only in Oz Experiences
Meetings AsiaPacific
Although some of the following experiences—like whale watching—technically can be done in other places, Australians will tell you that everything, including the wildlife, is bigger and better in the Land Down Under.
Here are some once-in-a-lifetime Australian experiences:
Whale Watching
Many coastal towns offer boat or “flightseeing” trips in additon to shoreside viewing stations. Depending on where you are, July to October is prime whale-watching season.
Climb Sydney Harbour Bridge
Thanks to innovative company BridgeClimb Sydney, your attendees can don a specialized “BridgeSuit,” hook themselves to a cable, and begin their climb to the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge arch, 440 feet above water. See www.bridgeclimb.com for more information and an amazing, if dizzyingly frenetic, video.
Penguins on Parade
Found along the coasts of Australia, penguins spend the day at sea and can often be seen when they return to their sandy burrows in the evening. To see the penguins at close quarters, wear dark clothing and remain still. They’ll often walk right past you.
Pet a Koala
At wildlife parks within easy reach of several major cities you can hold, feed and photograph these teddy bear-like creatures. Beware though, as wild koalas are known to have a temperament that’s downright nasty compared to their well pampered, park-bound bretheren.
Camel Treks
There’s not many places outside of the Middle East where you can ride one of these loping, bumpy creatures. Originally imported to play a key role in the early exploration of the continent, camels still work as mounts and pack animals. Today, there’s nothing like a camel ride near Uluru/Ayer’s Rock ( see Wonders Down Under sidebar) to awaken an attendee’s inner Indiana Jones.
