Sydney is one of the easiest cities for North Americans to visit because it's basically a Western city right in the middle of the Asia-Pacific region. Most of following information is courtesy of the Sydney CVB (
www.scvb.com.au).
When to go
Sydney enjoys a temperate climate year-round. It has four distinct seasons, with summer running December-February and winter extending from June-August. Sydney’s sub-tropical climate provides average temperatures ranging from 60º F in the winter months to 79º F in summer. During summer, the time is GMT plus 11 hours (October-March). Winter time is GMT plus 10 hours (March-October).
Costs
The average room rate varies between $107 (AUS) for a three-star hotel to $219 (AUS) for a five-star hotel--in U.S. Dollars that's $90-$185, quite the bargain. A 10 percent tax is included in the price of all goods and services (GST) sold in Australia. Those leaving Australia who buy goods no more than 30 days before leaving can take advantage of the Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) to get back the GST. No service charge applies in Australia. It is acceptable to leave a small tip for exceptional service.
Health requirements
Sydney is a fully modern city with Western standards of health care. No specific vaccinations are required for entry into Australia. A yellow fever certificate will be required from visitors traveling from an infected country.
Safety
A generally safe place, travelers should exercise the same caution in Sydney that they would in any big city.
Electricity
Electrical supply: 240 volts, 50 Hz. Three-pin plugs are used, although an adapter is required. Most hotels provide 110-volt outlets for electric shavers.
Money
One Australian Dollar equals 100 Australian cents; at press time, one Australian dollar equaled about 85 cents, U.S. All major credit cards are widely accepted. Traveler's checks are widely accepted or can be changed at a bank. International airports and major hotels provide money changing facilities. ATMs are available at many places in the city and in restaurants and pubs.
Visas and customs
Travelers to Australia need a valid passport and visa. New Zealanders only need a passport. Check the latest information at
www.immi.gov.au. Australia has very strict laws regarding goods brought into the country, especially animals, animal products and foodstuffs. Visit
www.customs.gov.au for more information.
