Risks and Rewards: Crowd Sourcing an Event for 30,000 People

Have you thought about giving up more control of your conference? What is holding you back? There is no guarantee your attendees will achieve their goals and objectives, even if you continue to plan your event the way you always have.

Are You On The List?

Blogging your own list has its risks as well. You might think it is a good way to get people to visit and drive traffic to your blog. However, if you leave someone off a list who thinks they should be on it, you risk damaging that relationship. I learned this lesson the hard way one year ago. I hope that taking that into consideration along with the analysis above, you can avoid similar mistakes in creating or sharing lists.

The Inventor of Social Currency

There is a dark side to Facebook that people like to forget. Rushkoff reminds us that it is easy to know what the purpose of a tool is by who is using it. Facebook is free for users so they are the product, not the consumers. Most people believe they have a right to use Facebook and they like to complain when Facebook makes changes and yet they don’t pay a dime for this service that lets them stay connected to their family and friends. Many people are starting to realize they can’t hide behind Facebook’s privacy settings and they have transitioned their presence on social media to a more professional one. By the way, it is against Facebook’s terms of service to have more than one profile as an individual, just in case someone told you that was a good idea.

Are your online and offline networks separate entities?

The focus of Nicholas Christakis’s research was interesting. He spoke about how the people in your network (up to three degrees of separation) can affect whether or not you are likely to be obese, altruistic, or get enough sleep. Christakis called them Real Social Networks and made a very stark contrast to online social networks. It was clear that years of scientific research went into his research on offline social networks but the example he offered on why online social networks are not effective was not as well researched. The online social networks he studied were related to friends, clubs and roommates in school. I would argue that if you study someone’s social network in school vs. 10+ years after they have graduated, the data will be much different. Most of the audience at WEC, I would assume, is in this category.

The Surprising Power of Our Social Networks

If I tweet something, a link to someone else’s article, a link to my blog post, an original thought, I am influencing anyone who reads it. The real question is if someone reads my blog post, are they truly influenced by me? Does it depend on the quality of article? …whether or not they are able to create an actionable change in their lives? Do new ideas influence us whether or not we do anything about them? We hear a lot about “Content is King” but I have heard a few people say that while content is important, context is more important.

Does our twitter community feel elitist?

Here’s the truth. If you were not already part of that community, it would feel a bit elitist, not as welcoming, as the most prolific tweeters have now gotten to know each other “in real life” and use the platform as a means to socialize as well as share content. In fact, the sharing of content seemed different, too. How many people actually use it for learning?
