Budget Planning Tips for Social Events

When planning a social event, you first need to create a budget. Here are some helpful tips for getting and staying on track: •  Create a budget and define what it is you want to accomplish with the event. •  Envision what your event looks like and decide what elements are the most important. Ask yourself if you’ve been to an event that you’d like to mimic. •  Determine what type of event you want (i.e.: lunch, dinner, reception) and what options you might include in relation to the number of guests. •  Think about all of the elements early because all ...

Preventing Guest Information Theft in Meeting Contracts

Hotels and other meeting industry vendors process millions of credit card charges daily. They are also entrusted with tons of guests’ personal information, including driver’s licenses, birth dates, home addresses and personal email addresses. Given the increasing threat of computer hackers, it seemed like only a matter of time before a breach of hotels’ computer systems occurred.  Unfortunately that time has arrived. When a national hotel management company recently revealed guests’ credit card data was stolen from at least 15 hotels over a 9-month period, the hospitality industry joined the list of large retailers whose customers are victims of ...

How to Effectively Work With a Revenue Manager

Revenue managers work in tandem with the hotel’s sales department to ensure the best partnership possible is created between the property and a customer. While the sales department holds the primary responsibility to develop and maintain an understanding of a client’s needs, the revenue manager is responsible for ensuring those needs are aligned with the business objectives of the hotel. Beyond the basics, the revenue manager will work with the sales manager to identify need ...

This blog, as do all the blogs I write, does not necessarily reflect the views or positions of Stamats, the parent company of Meetings Focus, or of Meetings Focus magazine. If you follow the news at all, you probably heard the Arizona Legislature recently passed SB 1062 that would have allowed businesses in the state to discriminate against people who are Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, or Transgender (LGBT) on the basis of the business owner's or individual's religious beliefs. Supporters of the bill said it would help protect religious freedom. There was an outcry from the hospitality community including American Airlines and Marriott Hotels; from sports (the ...

FAM Trip Abuse: A Legal and Ethical Dilemma

Recently reported in the news: An association CEO traveled to a well-known island destination for a 5-day FAM trip to evaluate sites for the association’s lucrative annual meeting. The island’s convention officials met with her, paid her airfare, and provided local accommodations and other VIP benefits. But after the CEO returned home, news reports revealed to island officials that the CEO had been terminated from her position several months earlier for spending association funds on personal expenses. Further, current association officers never heard of plans to host the meeting at the island destination. The annual meeting will probably never happen. This is just the latest in a ...
