I’m a strong believer in professional association involvement, and have served as a past president of Meeting Professionals International's Southern California Chapter (MPISCC) and a past board member of the Southern California Society of Association Executives (SCSAE). I also currently serve as a member of the Meetings Focus editorial advisory board, and as an industry speaker, trainer and panelist, am frequently invited to facilitate industry forums and address organizations—including MPI chapters, convention and visitors bureaus, colleges and universities, sales forces and allied industry associations.

After two decades as a business development executive in IT and new media, I turned to my original dream of being a professional writer. That was in 2004, and with Meetings Focus as one of my first clients, my professional adventure continues to this day.

I started here in late 2000, after spending about eight years covering the travel agent side of the industry, focusing on destination coverage. I’ve seen a lot of change in the time I’ve been in the industry, from the post-9/11 downturn to days of largesse and then the last recession, which I think has been by far the worst in terms of its impact on the industry.

I’ve been a writer and editor for over two decades, with much of my focus in the travel sector. My current position involves writing feature and destination pieces, overseeing our social media efforts, and helping the meetingsfocus.com website reach its full potential.

Past life: head of conference operations for SPIE, a large engineering society running international city-wide events and trade shows around the world.

As a newspaper staff journalist or freelancer, Gary has published hundreds of articles on a wide variety of subjects including travel essays, art and music criticism, profile pieces, business journalism, lifestyle articles and much more.

I grew up in Chicago, followed my heart out West at 19 and have left it in San Francisco ever since. I graduated from San Francisco State University with a degree in journalism and have worked in the publishing industry for more than 15 years. Nowadays, I manage the work flow of the Meetings Focus editorial department and oversee all destination-related content from staff and freelance writers.

Research and writing for Meetings Focus publications, a defense-oriented think tank, and two computer-security firms—quite a bit of diversity!

Ruth has covered the meetings and conventions sector of the travel and hospitality industry for over 20 years. As Meetings Focus contributing editor, she profiles destinations and reports on industry trends.

A new professional producing events for a DMC in the Tampa, Fla., area. I am starting to build lasting relationships with professionals in our industry. A thirst for knowledge that is not easily quenched--I am looking to make a difference in the world.
