Las Vegas MGM Mirage debuted CityCenter (866.722.7171; www.citycenter.com), one of the largest sustainable developments in existence, in December. The mixed-use development includes ARIA Resort & Casino (702.590.7757; www.arialasvegas.com), with 4,004 guest rooms and 300,000 square feet of meeting space; Vdara (702.590.2333; www.vdara.com), an all-suite hotel featuring a spa and more than 10,000 square feet of meeting space; Crystals, a 500,000-square-foot retail and entertainment district; and Mandarin Oriental, Las Vegas (702.590.8888; www.mandarinoriental.com/lasvegas), which features meeting space including a ballroom for up to 600 people and a boardroom.Â
The Encore at Wynn Las Vegas (702.770.7100; www.encorelasvegas.com) recently opened with 2,042 rooms, a casino, multiple restaurants and meeting space. The 64-story, $500 million Trump International Hotel and Tower Las Vegas (702.982.0000; www.trumplv.com) is now open with 1,282 suites, a spa, restaurants and meeting facilities. Hard Rock Hotel & Casino (702.693.5000; www.hardrockhotel.com) recently added 70,000 square feet of meeting space and opened two new upscale towers as part of a major expansion and renovation. The additions include the 490-unit Paradise Tower and the 374-unit HRH Tower. Hard Rock International debuted a new Hard Rock Cafe Las Vegas (702.733.7625; www.hardrock.com) on the Strip. The 42,000-square-foot venue features a 950-seat restaurant, a live concert venue and the world’s largest Rock Shop complete with Hard Rock’s limited-edition merchandise. The memorabilia collection is showcased via innovative multimedia technology, including interactive experiences using Microsoft Surface and Rock Wall multitouch technology. This is Hard Rock’s second cafe location in Las Vegas; the original cafe, located at the Hard Rock Hotel, remains open. The Monte Carlo Resort and Casino (702.730.7777; www.montecarlo.com) recently opened an exclusive boutique hotel concept called Hotel 32 (www.hotel32lasvegas.com) on the top floor of the property. Guests who stay at Hotel 32 are entitled to special services, including limo transportation from the airport and a suite assistant offering escorted, private elevator access an d a check-in-free arrival. Guests also have access to Lounge 32, which offers an assortment of refreshments and evening cocktails.
Elad Properties, which owns New York’s Plaza Hotel, plans to develop the Plaza Las Vegas (212.807.6161; www.eladproperties.com) on the site of the recently imploded New Frontier & Casino. The $5 billion luxury resort, slated for completion in 2012, will feature 3,500 rooms, 300 residences and convention space.
Henderson/Lake Las Vegas The 390-room M Resort Spa Casino (702.797.1000; www.themresort.com) opened in March in Henderson with a full-service spa, multiple restaurants, 40,000 square feet of meeting space and a 100,000-square-foot pool area with waterfalls. Olympia Gaming is developing the $2 billion Southern Highlands Resort (702.220.6565; www.olympiagamingllc.com) on a 100-acre site across the street from M Resort Spa Casino. The first phase of the mixed-use project is slated to include 300 hotel rooms, a meeting and convention facility, and entertainment and retail venues. Loews Lake Las Vegas (702.567.6000; www.loewshotels.com) recently renovated its Andalusian Gardens, a 4,000-square-foot outdoor terrace that can now accommodate up to 600 guests for outdoor meetings and receptions. Aside from the newly renovated space, the hotel has 45,000 square feet of indoor function space, including the 20,600-square-foot Casablanca Ballroom.
Mesquite Primm The Primm Valley Resort & Casino (877.FUN.STOP; www.primmvalleyresorts.com) recently opened a new 12,000-square-foot spa featuring massages, body treatments, Aveda signature facials, waxing, manicures and pedicures. The facility also has separate saunas, Jacuzzis and steam rooms, plus a fitness center.

I started here in late 2000, after spending about eight years covering the travel agent side of the industry, focusing on destination coverage. I’ve seen a lot of change in the time I’ve been in the industry, from the post-9/11 downturn to days of largesse and then the last recession, which I think has been by far the worst in terms of its impact on the industry.
