Luxe Life By MARIA LENHART
Although I lived in the Boston area for several years back in the 1980s, one of the few places in the region I didn't visit was Newport. When I finally did get there during a recent chapter meeting of the Society of American Travel Writers, I had a chance to see why the richest people in America flocked to Newport during the Gilded Age—and are still flocking. (Oracle CEO Larry Ellison recently purchased the Astors' Beechwood Mansion, much to the chagrin of local wedding and event planners who had long used the palatial site.)

Broadway.com/Groups, a resource for group Broadway theater tickets, recently introduced a free-of-charge interactive application that allows travel buyers to promote and sell the most popular Broadway shows directly on their own website. Tailored for group organizers and meeting planners, among others, the new Group Sales Widget is available in two versions—one for those who want to package shows with other tour components and one for those who prefer to have their clients book directly. Both allow users to view video footage and production photos, and browse show descriptions, age appropriateness and group minimums. The Group Sales Widget currently features 15 Broadway shows, including Billy Elliot, Chicago and Jersey Boys. Users copy and paste the HTML code onto their website. The widget can be downloaded directly at www.broadway.com/groups/widget.

I started here in late 2000, after spending about eight years covering the travel agent side of the industry, focusing on destination coverage. I’ve seen a lot of change in the time I’ve been in the industry, from the post-9/11 downturn to days of largesse and then the last recession, which I think has been by far the worst in terms of its impact on the industry.
